Federal is one of the most sought-after addresses in the Byron hinterland — a tight-knit village community set high in the hills with views across to the Nightcap Ranges and a quiet that city money can’t buy. 71 Charltons Road is the kind of property that defines why people come here. A beautifully renovated 1920s character home on 58 acres of prime grazing land, with a separate guest residence, an additional two-bedroom dwelling, and grounds that feel more resort than rural.
Listed by Dodds Real Estate, this was an all-day shoot — arriving before sunrise and staying through to twilight to capture every facet of the property and the extraordinary light that moves across this elevated ridgeline throughout the day.
The Homestead
The main residence has been artfully renovated and extended by well-known winners of “The Block”, and it shows in every detail. The original 1920s character has been preserved — weatherboard cladding, wide verandahs, VJ panelling throughout — while the extension and renovation have brought the home into a completely different league.

The formal living room is anchored by a full-height sandstone fireplace with a sculptural branch chandelier overhead — the kind of statement piece that photographs beautifully from every angle. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors open directly onto the rear entertainment deck, flooding the space with natural light and connecting it to the hinterland views beyond.

The Kitchen
The kitchen is designed for serious entertaining. Dark timber cabinetry with a stone island bench, rattan pendant lights, and a mirror splashback that doubles the sense of space. It flows seamlessly into the dining area — open plan but thoughtfully zoned, with the warmth of hardwood floors and the raked VJ ceiling tying everything together.

The Hallway
The central hallway is a design statement in its own right — shiplap walls in soft grey, geometric runner, striped drum pendant lights with gold interiors, and a curated collection of art and objects that give the home real personality. It draws you through from the front door toward the rear living spaces with the hinterland framed at the far end.

The Bedrooms and Bathroom
The master suite is beautifully finished — a dark feature wall with VJ panelling, sunburst mirror, and golden-toned styling that feels warm and inviting. Sliding glass doors open to the verandah and the green garden beyond.

The guest bedrooms continue the curated feel with layered textiles, original artwork, and the kind of attention to detail that makes every room worth photographing.

The bathroom features geometric tiles, a freestanding soaker tub beneath louvre windows looking out to the garden, and a heated towel rail — every detail considered.

The Grounds and Pool
The grounds are where this property truly separates itself. Manicured north-facing lawns, landscaped gardens, and an award-winning resort-style swimming pool by Secret Gardens of Sydney with a timber sundeck and outdoor lounge furniture. The stone steps leading up from the pool to the homestead create one of the most striking approaches we’ve photographed — especially at twilight.

Lifestyle at Sunrise
We started the day before dawn. One of the most powerful images from the shoot was captured at sunrise — a yoga session on the pool deck as the morning sun broke through the tree line. It’s a lifestyle image rather than a traditional real estate shot, and it tells the story of what it actually feels like to live here in a way that a room-by-room walkthrough never could.

Drone — The Full 58 Acres
With 58 acres of prime grazing land, drone photography was essential. The wide aerials show the full scope of the estate — the main homestead compound with its multiple dwellings, the rolling paddocks falling away to the valleys below, and the surrounding rainforest and hinterland that makes Federal one of the most beautiful locations in the Northern Rivers.

The elevated drone shot of the front facade captures the classic proportions of the home — the traditional gabled roofline, the wraparound verandahs, the established gardens framing the house on every side.

Twilight
Federal sunsets are special, and this one delivered. As the light dropped, the homestead came alive — warm interior glow spilling through the windows, garden uplighting illuminating the stone steps, and the sky turning pink and purple behind the roofline. We shot from multiple drone positions to capture the front facade, the rear garden approach, and the pool compound all at their best.

The Video
This property also received the full video treatment. We produced a cinematic property film that captures the flow of the home, the scale of the land, and the lifestyle that 71 Charltons Road offers — from the sunrise yoga session through to the twilight drone sequences.
A Full Day, Well Spent
This was a sunrise-to-sunset booking — and it needed to be. A 58-acre estate with multiple dwellings, resort-style grounds, and this level of interior design can’t be captured in an hour. The early morning light showed the lifestyle. The midday sun revealed the architectural details and the scale of the land. The afternoon golden hour warmed the interiors. And twilight brought the whole story together with the homestead glowing against the hinterland sky.
For prestige acreage properties across Federal, Coorabell and the upper hinterland, a full-day shoot with photography, drone, twilight and video is the way to tell the complete story.
